Public Art Gallery of Quinta do Mocho (Part 1)

Alegria del Prado

Loures City Hall (in Lisbon) has been affirming itself in recent years as a national and international reference concerning street art or as some will call it public art. One of the examples of this investment in street art projects is Quinta do Mocho, a social housing quarter in Loures.

Currently, Quinta do Mocho is not just a social neighborhood: now its buildings are canvas for Public Art. Since October 2014, Quinta do Mocho became a Public Art Gallery, and we can count over 64 murals executed in the neighborhood.

On average, between 1,500 to 2,000 liters of paint and 40 to 50 cans of spray are used to paint the murals and the artists take up to 2-4 days to complete the paintings.

Until now the artist who took more time executing a mural was the artist Utopia, who painted for a week, from nine in the morning to eight in the evening. You can check out his work below.

Guided visits to this public art gallery are often held, you just need to show up in Casa da Cultura de Sacavém at 10AM on the last Saturday of each month.

You can check out some of the murals done in the neighborhood until October 2017, below.

Freshly Painted Train Station Tunnel in Algés

Just before the 2017 edition of the NOS Alive Music Festival, the Algés train station tunnel suffered a renovation.  The CMOeiras, CP – Comboios de Portugal and IP-Infraestruturas de Portugal proposed a challenge to the artists 2Upla, Nomen, Jorge Cordeiro, Pedro Esteves and counted with the participation of about 13 other graffiti writers, to change the face of this location.

It was a project of approximately 1,2 km2, divided in zones and executed during 10 consecutive days. The themes around this project emerged from the concept of mobility, “Mobility Factory” and from the importance of the Algés riverside walkway as one of the biggest concert stages located at the riverfront of Lisbon.

Below you can find photos of the final result.

Press release information:

“Having created his first three-dimensional pieces with wood for a solo exhibition held last December in Barcelona, Vasco Mourão continued to experiment with other forms of blurring the lines between two-dimensional drawing and the sculptural object. The most recent materialisation of his hyper-depictions of urban landscapes is presented here in brass discs where, according to the artist, he managed to find the perfect balance between the thickness of paper and the strength of a frame capable of holding itself. Each disc was subjected to a colouring process with acids (vinegar and salt) in order to create a unique canvas of subtle textures and hues. From this foundation, the artist then drew his meandering architectural compositions with a black pen.

As the artist states:
“This is an ongoing series that focuses on the concept of infinite, of something that has no beginning or end. Sequences of imaginary buildings and constructions that grow into each other in a continuous loop. Departing from my traditional medium of pen and paper, this is a new line of work that lies between a sculpture and a two-dimensional drawing. By working on a brass sheet, these pieces are freed from the traditional frame and the physical limits of the pieces are an integral part of the work. Drawn by hand, they speak of urban landscapes, repetition, distortion, and movement.”

About the artist:
Vasco Mourão (1979), also known as Mister Mourão, is a Portuguese artist, illustrator, and architect based in Barcelona. Obsessed with the drawing of cities and architectural forms, his practice has been establishing itself through line drawing, usually with recourse to a black pen, by way of which he creates dense, intricate compositions blending both real and imaginary structures and spaces. Drawing mostly from memory and his knowledge as an architect, he deconstructs the elements of the city and re-arranges them on a variety of mediums, creating a hyper-depiction of the urban landscape and its textures. Besides creating commissions for clients such as Apple and working in the field of editorial illustration—having been featured in leading publications such as The Washington Post, The New Yorker, and Wired, among others—he has also been showcasing his work in exhibitions and painting large-scale murals.
To mark the occasion, we’ll be launching one limited edition serigraphy by the artist. “
